It is situated upon a beautiful peninsula. In 620 B.C. immigrants from the city of Milet - the largest South Greek centre on the Asia Minor coast - turned the old Thracian settlement into a rich Hellene colony - the independent city-state Apollonia-Pontica.

The Apolonia Art Festival is the one of the best choices if you are looking for that kind of experience. Its debut was in 1991 and since then it has been held annually at the end of the summer season in the small town of Sozopol on the Black Sea cost. This year it opens on August 31 with a concert of the Pirin Folk Ensemble. The organisers have included more than 60 events in the programme. Three theatre performances will be staged for the first time at the festival. The first, "Phone Booth", is directed by four Balkan directors and is the result of an international culture project.
